Maria and Bente Fridén Brunell with ch Izakhan’s Inula and Int ch Dhoki Apsos Bzanba Li-Li at the Norwegian specialty in 2004

How it all began

Zeppi, Buzaras Felona, was imported to Norway from Sweden, as Norway's first registerd TT, early in 1975 by Bente's husband, Trond Tuv. In the divorce, Bente got Zeppi and Trond got the sterio. Zeppi became show champion and got Norway's first registerd TT puppies. Sadly none of these were bred from later. We did not have our prefix, Dhoki Apso, when Zeppi's litter was born, but we consider this our first litter. Zeppi died when she was a little more than 10 years

Our next TT, Maria's first, was Bixi, Izakhan's Bix-I. We got her late 1994, when she was 1,5 years old. With help from her breeder, Hege Ruud, she became a champion. When Bixi was 3 years, we started to wish for TT number 2. And when Bente turned 40, she got Dolly, Izakhan's Inula, as a present.

Maria started with both obedience and showing our TTs. Juniorhandling also became a big hobby of hers and after several first places through the years, in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, she ended her JH career going 2nd in the Norwegian championship.

In 2000, we applied for a prefix, and ‘Dhoki Apso’ was approved. Dolly became Norwegian Champion this same year and then, with help from her breeder, we decided to have a litter from her. Our first litter together, the B-litter, was born 4th of december 2000, and we kept both a male and a female - Li-Li and Zappa. Later Li-Li became our first homebred INT/CIB Champion and also most winning TT in Norway.

From Li-Li’s second and last litter in 2008, we kept a female, Dolce, who became Maria’s first ‘own’ dog and the start of a more planned and ‘bigger’ breeding program.

In 2009, after years and years of admiring the Falamandus TTs, we was lucky to get the opportunity to buy a TT puppy from Tanja - Falamandus. This was Falamandus Out To Kick you, a true TT in every way that have enriched our lives and breeding in many ways.

THE REST IS HISTORY ❤️

Our vision for the Tibetan Terrier

We belive that a true TT is founded on these three pilars.

Health

We only use healthy TTs in our breeding program. Parents have official records of their hips and eyes, together with DNA-profiles for breed specific diseases.

Temperament

We thrive to produce TTs with that typical TT personality & temperament
partly cat - partly dog - partly human

Breed type

We aim to produce TTs according to the breed standard

Precervation of the Tibetan Terrier

As modern breeders, we have an obligation to preserve our breed the best way possible. History of bottlenecks and close inbreeding/linebreeding have led us to the point were several breeds are today - it is not good in the long run, as many geneticist have proven numerous of times.

We take this seriously and have taken these actions to do our best!

Inbreeding & linebreeding

Inbreeding is defined as mating of individuals that are closely related through common ancestry, and ‘to mate individuals that are more related to each other than the average COI in the population’. Linebreeding is a form of inbreeding, just in a less excessive amount. Inbreeding/linebreeding in dogs can lead to an increase in the prevalence of inherited disorders, a decrease in viability/ longevity and reproductive ability, loss of genetic diversity, shorter life span and reduction of immune system function. Collectively, these effects of inbreeding/linebreeding are called inbreeding depression.

Because of this, Dhoki Apso are strong believers of keeping a low inbreeding rate for all our litters as one of the most important things to preserve our great breed! To still keep the true breed type, we practice assortative mating - we find partners with similar phenotypic traits, but without them being to close related. To show that we take this seriously, we publish the inbreeding rate (COI) over five generations for all our dogs and litters. Kennel clubs usually only register 3 generations for imports and/or stud dogs from abroad and as a result of this procedure, the rate published on pedigrees or in databases might not be correct. So all COI’s on this page is calculated by Maria herself.

The loss of genes

When breeding purebred dogs, it is nearly impossible to get all the genes of one generation into the next one. A big challenge is how we can avoid to loose genes, just by random chance and/or because of strong selection for specific traits, when breeding.

To be able to keep as many genes in a population of dogs, more dogs need to be used in breeding (in a proper way - to just breed your female without any context and thought of what’s in her lines and how her pedigrees/ancestors work together with a partner, is just thoughtless!) and less dogs should have lots of litters. That is why we try to keep more than one puppy from each litter - not only at home, but through co-ownership agreements, agreements or encouragement to have a litter in a proper manner - with help from us. This way we can keep up our breeding program without females haveing many litters - they are first of all dogs and not producers. Read more about this HERE.

We are also strong believers of the Norwegian Kennel Club’s 5% rule, that no dog should have more puppies than 5% of what is born in the breed the last five years. Keeping this in mind, we try to use males that have less offsprings in Norway. Read more HERE.

Educational background

A big part of breeding dogs is to constantly try to learn more - evolve and become better. Maria have finished both ‘breeding school’-courses to the Norwegian Kennel Club, she have also finished their course about cynology (dog anatomy and movement) and complete the written part to become a ringsteward. The two latter is both parts that needs to be done before considering to start the education to become a judge - which is a goal for the future!

Health results

One of the most important things to produce healthy TTs with a desired and typical temperament, is to be honest and open about where you come from and what you have. We try to be a good example and therefor publish a list of every litter we’ve had and the information we know about each puppy. This way, people can read information directly from us, hopefully not listen to much to gossip and ask us directly if there is anything 🙏🏼

THANKS TO

We are forever thankfull to the breeders of the females we have been able to buy. Their time, effort and help whenever we asked. Without Hege and Tanja - we would not be where we are today!

The owners of every male we have got the opportunity to use also needs to be mentioned. You have seen the same visions that we have had and have very much to do with what Dhoki Apso is today as welll - Thank you!

Thanks to every judge who have put up a dog from our team. For encouraging and constructive words.

Last, but certainly not least - our family, friends and puppy buyers! For support, beliving in us and your trust. We love each and every one of you! It truely takes a village ❤️
